“This article focuses on the “creative city” and the association between the phenomenon of creativity and the city. The first section provides a framework and an approach to the definitions and theories underlying the theme of the “creative city” (“creativity”, “creative industries” and the “creative city”).
On the basis of the most representative analyses and interpretations of the theme, the second section explores the possible challenges of the “creative city” in terms of political orientations and urban practices (innovative environments, hard and soft infrastructures, management and sustainability, etc.).
The Portuguese situation is then contextualised in the light of these concepts and principles, on the basis of certain leading, internationally successful cases and some national examples which have recently begun to emerge.
The closing remarks aim to contribute towards the analysis of the importance of the role of architecture in the “creative city” by indicating certain conclusions, even though there has been very little research and analysis in this área”.
